In our 'Better Bettor' series, Tipico Sportsbook explains betting terminology and concepts in the sports betting world.
A teaser is bet that combines two more more separate outcomes by altering spreads or totals for a better chance of winning. Teasers give the bettor a chance to beat the book at their own game, moving lines in their favor.
For example, Xaver vs Cincy has a total of 140 points, and Dayton is a 3-point favorite over Toledo. By rule, you never take an under in the cross-town shootout and you're still convinced UD would have won it all in 2020, but you're just not sure either number can be covered.
So, you make a 5-point teaser that moves the over down to 135, and Dayton down to a 2-point underdog to try to enhance your chances at winning.
There are many variations of teasers and, like parlays, adding legs will increase the odds of a higher payout. However, every leg of the teaser will need to win for the bet to win. If any leg loses, the bet loses.
