Super Bowl Sunday may be as close as it gets to being a religious holiday in some parts of the U.S. without actually being one. The Super Bowl has been around since 1967, and to many people, it's one of the most exciting sporting events of the year. Some even say that next to Thanksgiving, it’s the second biggest feasting day.

So get your football-laced deviled eggs, bean and cheese dips, chicken wings, and whatever else you fancy. Sit tight as we recap the last fifteen Super Bowl winners by year—and just in case you’ve been living on Mars for the past 365 days, we’ll also fill you in on who won the Super Bowl 2022.

Over the last 15 years, the scores from football’s biggest game have illuminated TVs across America:

Super Bowl XLII – The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots, 17-14

Super Bowl XLIII – The Pittsburgh Steeler defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23

Super Bowl XLIV – The New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 31-17

Super Bowl XLV – The Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25

Super Bowl XLVI – The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots, 21-17

Super Bowl XLVII – The Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31

Super Bowl XLVIII – The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos, 43-8

Super Bowl XLIX – The New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks, 28-24

Super Bowl 50 – The Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers, 24-10

Super Bowl LI – The New England Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 34-28

Super Bowl LII – The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots, 41-33

Super Bowl LIII – The New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 13-3

Super Bowl LIV – The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20

Super Bowl LV – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-9

Super Bowl LVI – The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20

A decade and a half of the National Football League title games has brought us hype, drama, and stunning spectacles—but not every Super Bowl game goes down in history for it’s excitement. Looking back, these are the six most electrifying post-season finales over that stretch—due to on and off-field events.

Super Bowl XLII—New York Giants over New England Patriots, 17-14

Considered one of the biggest upsets in professional sports, this Super Bowl ranks:

5th on the NFL’s 100 Greatest Games

3rd on the NFL’s 100 Greatest Plays for David Tyree’s famous “helmet catch.”

Tyree’s game-defining grab gave the trailing Giants a 32-yard gain and the momentum to take the win four plays later, upsetting the Patriots’ perfect season. Eli Manning would go on to win the Super Bowl MVP.

XLVI—New York Giants over New England Patriots, 21-17

The two northeastern teams met again to battle it out over the Lombardi Trophy. And despite the Giants' mediocre season, they would go on to once again beat the Patriots. In fact, they made history doing so. No team besides the Giants has been a Super Bowl champion with such a terrible regular season record: 9-7.

Super Bowl XLVII—Baltimore Ravens over San Francisco 49ers, 34-31

This Super Bowl had a couple of nicknames. The first was the HarBowl, after the two siblings, Jim and John Harbaugh, came face-to-face as opposing head coaches. Then, when the game was suspended due to a power outage midway, it was also referred to as the Blackout Bowl. Despite this, the Ravens won, upsetting the 49ers' 5-0 record for Super Bowl wins.

Super Bowl XLIX—New England Patriots over Seattle Seahawks, 28-24

The Seahawks were eager for back-to-back Super Bowl wins, but unlike the previous year, the Patriots proved to be much more of a challenge.

This game went back and forth until the final few seconds, with the Seahawks—then down by four—on the Patriots' one-yard line. However, instead of rushing the ball, the Seahawks went for a pass that cornerback Malcolm Butler intercepted, sealing the Patriots' victory.

Super Bowl LI—New England Patriots over Atlanta Falcons, 34-28

If you’re familiar with how many times the underdog won the Super Bowl and Tom Brady’s Super Bowl wins and losses, then you’ll know that this game was certainly one for the books and helped Tom Brady earn his GOAT status. Despite a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons scored three consecutive touchdowns, with the Patriots only able to squeeze in a field goal before halftime.

The game's largest point gap was in the third quarter when the Falcons led 28-3. Despite this, Brady and the Patriots plowed forward, scoring 25 points, including three touchdowns and one field goal to tie the game 28-28. This would be the first overtime in Super Bowl history, and the Patriots would take the win and become the Super Bowl Champion.

Have you been wondering which team has the most Super Bowl wins? This game would skyrocket the New Englands patriots and place them as one of the two teams with the most Super Bowl wins.

Super Bowl LII—Philadelphia Eagles over New England Patriots, 41-33

This Super Bowl was famous for the Philly Special—a trick play involving Eagles’ quarterback Nick Foles and two other teammates. With the Eagles at fourth-and-goal seconds before halftime on the Patriots’ one-yard line, it was a snap, pitch, and throw to Foles, who was wide open in the endzone. The Eagles would remain on top the whole game, but the Patriots were never far behind.

Based on this season’s and recent years’ performance, the favorites for making the 2023 Super Bowl are shaping up to be:

AFC – The Kansas City Chiefs or the Cincinnati Bengals

NFC – The San Francisco 49ers or the Philadelphia Eagles

And it’s looking like the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are current favorites to win this year’s Lombardi Trophy. But before the big game, there are still Divisional and Conference playoff rounds to play (and bet on).
