MLB Grand Slams in 2024 — Win with Tipico

This season's grand slam trends. Who's hitting these four-run bombs? How many will we see this season?

June 11, 2024

A great debate has raged among baseball enthusiasts about the most exciting play in the game. There are any number of options, including inside-the-park home runs, the final outs of a no hitter or perfect game, a walk-off hit among division rivals, a suicide squeeze…the list could go on and on.

Also in this mix is the grand slam, and Tipico is offering a way for its users to get some extra profit from long balls with the bases loaded this season — with a $25 minimum bet on any game, bettors can receive a $25 bet credit if that game features a grand slam. For more details, see the end of this article.

Here are some MLB league-wide trends about grand slams this year and in past seasons.

Grand Slam Trends

  • So far in 2024, there have been a total of 53 grand slams (through Monday). Of those, the National League has accounted for 34 and the American League 19.
  • Through Monday, all 30 clubs have played 1,978 games. A full season is 4,860 games, meaning we are pacing to have roughly 127 grand slams this season. That would be the exact same number as 2023.
  • American League teams are collectively on pace to hit 44 grand slams. That would be the league’s lowest total since 2014 (excluding 2020).
  • National League teams are on pace to collectively hit 84 grand slams. That would be the league’s highest number since 2021 and second-highest since 2000.
  • There has never been a gap that large between the two leagues, so one might expect the American League to hit relatively more home runs across the final 55 percent of the regular season.
  • The most grand slams hit in a single season is 176, which came in 2000. The next-closest mark is 159 grand slams hit in 2021.

Slams by Team

  • Seven teams have hit zero grand slams this season: Red Sox, Twins, Royals, Cardinals, Astros, Athletics, and Rangers.
  • The most grand slams hit by a single team is four, which six clubs have accomplished: Reds, Pirates, Giants, Orioles, Mariners, and Dodgers.
  • Hitting a lot of grand slams doesn’t necessarily lead to team success. Of those six teams, only three have at least a .500 record (through Monday).
  • The Guardians and Athletics hold the record for most grand slams in a single season by a team with 14. The Guardians accomplished this in 2006 and the Athletics in 2000. No team is currently on pace to challenge that record this season.

Slams by Player

  • The most grand slams hit by a player in a single season is six. This record is shared by Don Mattingly in 1987 and Travis Hafner in 2006.
  • Six players have hit multiple grand slams this season — but no player has hit more than two. It may be of little surprise that Bryce Harper and Adley Rutschman each have a pair of grand slams, but the likes of Cal Raleigh, Jazz Chisholm, and Jonathan India also are atop this leaderboard.
  • Minnesota Twin Royce Lewis has had a knack for hitting grand slams early in his career. He has five — including three in 2023 — across the first 304 plate appearances of his career.
