This Weekend in Sports: NFC Championship Rematch, College Title Games, MLS Playoffs

Big NFL games, college football conference title games, and big soccer matches are on tap.

November 30, 2023

This Weekend in Sports previews the biggest games and events for the coming weekend.

FC Cincinnati battles the Columbus Crew for a spot in the MLS Cup Final, the Denver Broncos go for their sixth straight win, the 49ers battle the Eagles in a huge NFC tilt and the College Football Playoff could get a big shakeup in several conference championship games this weekend in sports.

NFL

San Francisco 49ers (8-3) at Philadelphia Eagles (10-1), 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday

This likely is SF’s last chance to get the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. In this rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game, the man who wrecked that for the Niners – Eagles edge rusher Hasson Reddick – has 8.5 sacks this season and 48 over the past four seasons. The man he took out with a sack – Niners QB Brock Purdy – is the top-rated QB in the NFL and has 19 TDs and six INTs.

The Eagles are led by QB Jalen Hurts, who has 2,697 passing yards, 410 rushing yards and 11 rushing TDs, largely as a result of Phily’s patented “tush push,” in which a bunch of offensive linemen literally get behind Hurts and push him into the end zone. (That was not allowed in the NFL until 2005).

The Niners’ secondary, which has had issues this season, could have trouble with Philly receivers A.J. Brown (73 receptions, 1,050 yards, 7 TDs) and DeVonta Smith (55 receptions, 738 yards).

Tipico bettors have put 52 percent of moneyline bets on the 49ers to win (-150) and 72 percent of money on the 49ers to cover to spread (-3).

Denver Broncos (6-5) at Houston Texans (6-5), 1 p.m. ET Sunday

These are two of the more surprising teams in the league, and it’s mainly because of their QBs. Likely future Hall of Famer Russell Wilson has led Denver to five straight victories and has passed for 2,199 yards and 20 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Texans rookie C.J. Stroud has 3,266 yards (second in the NFL), 19 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Denver has beaten Houston four of their past five meetings.

Tipico bettors have put 80 percent of moneyline bets on the Broncos (+160) and 76 percent of money on Denver to cover (+3.5).

Cleveland Browns (7-4) at Los Angeles Rams (5-6), 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday

LA has won two in a row to save their season, thanks to RB Kyren Williams’ 143 yards rushing and Matthew Stafford’s four TD passes against the Cardinals last weekend. Rookie Puka Nacua is eighth in the NFL with 73 receptions.

Cleveland is in the thick of the NFL playoff chase, but the Browns are dealing with injury issues — QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson and WR Amari Cooper might not play, and DE Myles Garrett probably will gut out a shoulder injury. Big Play TV’s Chris McNeil details all the Browns’ issues but also says he’s confident they can emerge victorious in LA.

Tipico bettors have put 67 percent of the moneyline on the Rams (-180) but 55 percent of spread bets on the Browns to cover (+3.5).

College Football

Oregon (11-1, CFP No. 5) at Washington (12-0, CFP No. 3), 8 p.m. Friday

Pac-12 Championship Game

The Huskies could be seen as a team of destiny, or a team just scraping by. They’ve won six games by one-score margins, and easily could have lost recently to Arizona State, Washington State, Stanford, and Oregon State. They also beat Oregon by three earlier in the season. The Huskies only have a plus-49 score differential over the past eight weeks. Oregon, on the other hand, have blown out the teams that UW struggled with.

Ducks QB Bo Nix and the Huskies’ Michael Penix Jr. are 1-2 in the nation in passing yards.

Oregon can make a strong case for inclusion in the College Football Playoff with a solid victory, while UW certainly will cement its spot with a win.

Tipico bettors are putting 82 percent of moneyline bets and 56 percent of spread bets on Oregon (-370, -9.5).

Georgia (12-0, CFP No. 1) at Alabama (12-1, CFP No. 8), 4 p.m. ET Saturday

SEC Championship Game

The Bulldogs are going for their 30th straight victory in their quest for a third straight national title. They are ranked eighth in scoring (39.6 ppg) and sixth in scoring defense (15.8). Alabama QB Jalen Milroe has thrown multiple touchdowns and completed over 65 percent of his passes in his past three games.

Tipico bettors are putting 91 percent of moneyline bets on Georgia (-210) and 67 percent of spread bets on Georgia to cover (-5.5).

Michigan (12-0, CFP No. 2) vs. Iowa (10-2, CFP No. 16), 8 p.m. ET Saturday

Big Ten Championship Game

The Wolverines will create major headaches for the CFP committee if they lose this game, but don’t count out the Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes are giving up just 12.2 points per game this season, and coach Kirk Ferentz’s team is 8-2-1 against the spread in December games.

Coach Jim Harbaugh returns from his three-game suspension for Michigan. The Wolverines have won the past two Big Ten title games by a combined score of 85-25.

Tipico bettors are putting 96 percent of moneyline bets on Michigan (-2500) and 60 percent on Michigan to cover the spread (-22).

MLS

Conference Finals

FC Cincinnati at Columbus Crew, 6 p.m. ET Saturday

Tipico bettors have put 82 percent of moneyline bets on the Crew (+220).

Los Angeles FC at Houston, 9:30 p.m. ET Saturday

LA is trying to reach the MLS Cup Final for the second straight year. They’ve gotten a lot of big match experience this year, with championship losses in the CONCACAF Champions League and Campeones Cup final.

The Dynamo won the US Open Cup earlier this year and have not lost an MLS match in normal time since September.

Tipico bettors have put 91 percent of the moneyline bets on LA (-165).

Premier League

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton, 10 a.m. ET Saturday

Arsenal have scored in their past 31 meetings with the Wolves, one shy of their record of 32 against a single opponent. They also have given up the fewest goals (10) of any EPL side this season.

Manchester City vs Tottenham, 11:30 a.m. ET Saturday

Spurs have beaten City in five of their past seven Premier League games, but City have lost only two of their past 13 home matches against them.

Thus far, Tipico bettors have put 100 percent of moneyline bets on Arsenal (-360) and Man City (-350) to win.

UFC Fight Night

Beneil Dariush vs Arman Tsarukyan, Saturday

Tsarukyan (20-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) is more of a grappler but also has striking strengths, while Dariush (22-5-1 MMA, 16-5-1 UFC) is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai.

Tipico bettors are putting 83 percent of the money on Tsarukyan (-300).
