August 22, 2023

This Weekend in Sports previews the biggest games and events for the coming weekend.

Featherweight unification in UFC 290, the USMNT faces Canada in the Gold Cup knockout round, and several top MLB teams try to maintain their mojo heading into the All-Star break in this weekend’s top sports and betting action.

UFC 290

Alexander Volkanovski (25-2) vs. Yair Rodriguez (16-3), Saturday night in Las Vegas

O/U 4.5: -115; Moneyline – Volkanovski -370, Rodriguez +290

The Australian reigning featherweight champion battles the Mexican interim titleholder in this unification bout in the 290 main event. Volkanovski has won 12 straight featherweight fights, the past five of which were championship bouts.

Rodriguez can be unpredictable, however, and blends unique attacks with amazing speed to present a challenge to any fighter.

Atlanta Braves at Tampa Bay Rays – 6:40 p.m. ET Friday, 7:15 p.m. ET Saturday, 1:40 p.m. ET Sunday

Atlanta have won 17 of their past 19 games and had three win streaks of at least six games in June. The Braves, who have eight All-Stars in next week’s game, are leading the major leagues in OPS (.841), home runs (166) and are tied for first in batting average (.274). Meanwhile, TB lost four straight heading into Thursday’s game but are still well ahead in the AL East and are third in OPS and home runs.

Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers – 8:10 p.m. ET Friday, 4:10 p.m. ET Saturday, 2:10 p.m. ET Sunday

Cincy has won seven of eight and still leads the NL Central. Despite having one of the worst ERAs in baseball at 4.90, the Reds rank in the top 10 in OPS and batting average. Spencer Steer has an .881 OPS and 14 home runs. The Brewers, two games back of Cincy in the NL Central, have won three of four meetings between the teams.

Los Angeles Angels at Los Angeles Dodgers – 10:10 p.m. ET Friday, 9:10 p.m. ET Saturday

The Dodgers won the first two games in this season’s Freeway Series by 2-0 scores. Both LA teams are neck and neck in OPS, as the Dodgers are .775 and the Angels at .773 heading into Thursday’s games. The Angels are without Mike Trout (wrist surgery) and Shohei Ohtani (blister) for this series.

Wimbledon, July 3-July 16

Moneyline – Novak Djokovic -200, Carlos Alcaraz +245, Danill Medvedev +1500, Jannik Sinner +1500

Djokovic now has 350 singles victories in Grand Slam play – joining Roger Federer and Serena Williams as the only players to reach that plateau — and seems destined to win his third straight Slam tournament and maybe eventually the calendar Slam, which hasn’t been accomplished since Rod Laver in 1969. The only semblance of a possible crack in his armor is that Djoko lost 26 games in the first two rounds at Wimbledon, although he did win both in straight sets.

FC Cincinnati (13-5-2) at Charlotte (6-6-8), 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday

Moneyline – Charlotte +120, Draw +255, FC Cincinnati +220

Cincy came up short in its pursuit of 11 straight home victories last weekend with a 2-2 stalemate with New England — Cincy has only won one of their past four matches. Charlotte, however, hasn’t won since May 27 and has drawn with their past four opponents. FCC’s Luciana Acosta has nine goals, tied for sixth in the MLS.

Sergio Santos, who has had two solid substitute appearances, and Saudi Pro League newcomer Aaron Boudpendza give FC Cincinnati effectiveness at striker, as the team copes with the loss of Matt Miazga and Brandon Vazquez (Gold Cup duty) and Junior Moreno (injured).

New York City (5-9-7) at Columbus (10-5-6), 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday

Moneyline – Columbus -133, Draw +285, New York City +370

The Crew have five wins and two draws in their past seven matches and haven’t lost since May 28. One of those stalemates came against New York City on June 18. Christian Ramirez and Lucas Zelarayán each have eight goals this season. The Crew are 2-0 against NYCFC at Field, winning both by one goal. Columbus hasn’t lost at home in MLS action since April 29.

Gold Cup

U.S. vs Canada, 7:30 p.m. ET Sunday

Moneyline – U.S. -120, Draw +275, Canada +320

The USMNT reached the knockout round after successive 6-0 victories over Saint Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago in group play. The U.S. is seeking their second straight victory over their northern neighbors, whom they beat 2-0 to win the CONCACAF Nations League last month. FC Dallas forward Jesús Ferreira leads the Gold Cup with six goals after two straight hat tricks. He gives the U.S. a wealth of riches at striker alongside Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi.
