Columbus Crew Supporters Pumped for MLS Cup

Fans are excited about the Crew on the verge of a third MLS Cup title.

December 7, 2023

It’s hard to believe that only a few years ago, the Crew was perilously close to leaving Columbus for Austin. Now, they are on the brink of winning their third MLS Cup in the 18-year history of the playoffs, and second Cup in the past four seasons. The Eastern Conference champions Crew will host the Western winners Los Angeles FC at 4 p.m. ET Saturday at Field in Columbus, Ohio. The match can be viewed on Apple TV (free); FOX, FOX Deportes and TSN/RDS.

To get there, the Crew had to outlast Atlanta in a three-game first-round series, and then beat Orlando City SC and FC Cincinnati. Defending champs LAFC swept Vancouver and then shut out Seattle and Houston. LAFC has recorded three straight shutouts, only giving up two goals in the entire playoffs. Check out our entire breakdown of the MLS Cup final here.

“Our group have been sitting together for nearly 15 years,” says Chris H., a Crew season ticket member and Tipico customer. “Hosting in 2015 was amazing but two fluke goals cost us the Cup,” he said in reference to the Portland Timbers’ 2-1 victory over the Crew in the 2015 MLS Cup.

“Due to COVID limitations, not all of us got to see the Crew win in 2020. We are extremely excited to see the Crew host MLS Cup 2023. Using the Tpico app, I’m going to place a SGP with Crew moneyline, Cucho anytime Goal, Martinez anytime and over 3.5 goals.”

That’s a wise choice. Cucho Hernandez has scored four of the Crew’s 13 goals in this year’s playoffs after a regular season in which he scored 16.

It’s been an incredible year for the Crew, which has only lost twice since mid-September. And being on the verge of a third championship is also incredible when you realize that only five years ago, then-owner Anthony Precourt announced he was going to relocate the franchise to Austin, Texas. A “Save the Crew” movement was initiated and – long story short – the team got new ownership and remained in Columbus.

A year later, Columbus notched its second Cup title by defeating the Seattle Sounders. The Crew won its first title in 2008 by defeating the New York Red Bulls 3-1.

Tipico has been thrilled to be part of the Crew’s journey. “When Tipico Sportsbook and Columbus Crew announced their long-term partnership back in early 2022, we were incredibly excited to team up with a brand with championship DNA and deep roots in Ohio,” says Phil Goldfarb, Ohio Marketing Manager for Tipico. “Our partnership with the Crew provides us with a connection to the most passionate fanbase in Major League Soccer and we look forward to seeing that come to life on Saturday when Columbus will host LAFC in the MLS Cup.

“At Tipico, we strive to create innovative experiences for our customers and this weekend will further display how we champion Columbus and Ohio through our partnership with the Crew.”
