Now, we look at the top moments of some of the top NFL rivalries throughout history. Immaculate Reception There may be no more iconic play in NFL history. If you’ve been a fan of the NFL, you’re familiar with the miraculous bounce that led to Franco Harris of the Steelers scoring a game-winning touchdown in the 1972 AFC Divisional round playoff game against the Raiders. Pittsburgh was down 7-6 late in the fourth quarter when Terry Bradshaw targeted John “Frenchy” Fuqua with a pass that deflected into the waiting arms of Harris, who then ran the ball into the end zone for a score. <a href="https://state.tipico.us/login?prodsrc=SPORT" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><img src="https://cdn.sanity.io/images/7hhh6u8j/marketing-prod/96836e32fe31f2a7cbe7854bb61a4ecf955e24f5-1200x472.jpg" style="width: 100%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></a> There is controversy to this day surrounding the play, as some have claimed that the ball hit the ground rather than being caught by Harris. There’s also a dispute as to whether the pass deflected off Fuqua or defender Jack Tatum before ending up in Franco’s hands — this is important, because if it only hit Fuqua, the pass would have been incomplete based on the rules at the time. Regardless of which side of the debate readers may come down on, it is undeniable that the play set off a great rivalry between the Steelers and Raiders throughout the 1970s. The sides met in the playoffs for each of the next four seasons, with each side winning a pair of games and winning three combined Super Bowl titles during that time. The Catch Like the Raiders and Steelers, the Cowboys and 49ers consistently engaged in meaningful playoff matchups between the 1970s and 1980s. The rivalry included periods of dominance for both sides, with the Cowboys holding a 6-1 record over their West Coast rival in the 1970s. <img src="https://cdn.sanity.io/images/7hhh6u8j/marketing-prod/06aa869f6546350268177662badbaf4625d4d704-1200x472.jpg" style="width: 100%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"> The tide began to change in the 80s when Joe Montana took over under center for the 49ers. He led the team to a regular season win over Dallas in 1981 and then the teams squared off the same year in the NFC Championship Game at Candlestick Park. &nbsp; It was a back-and-forth matchup, which set up the historic fingertip grab for Dwight Clark. The 49ers had marched down to the Cowboys’ six-yard line and were down by six points with 51 seconds remaining. They were facing a third down when Montana lofted a ball high into the back corner of the end zone that looked to be heading out of bounds until Clark leapt and managed to barely stay in bounds to corral the game-winning score. This may be the second-most iconic play in league history and is simply known as “The Catch.” The 49ers went on to win Super Bowl XVI that year. Viking Favre in Green Bay The Bears-Packers rivalry may be the more well-known of the NFC North divisional matchups, but Favre’s departure from Green Bay to Minnesota certainly escalated things. The high point of the hatred came in Week 8 of the 2009 season when Favre returned to Lambeau Field for the first time as a Viking. He was greeted by a heavy chorus of boos but ultimately got the last laugh as he threw four touchdowns and beat his former team 38-26. Time ultimately healed all wounds as the Packers invited Favre back Lambeau in 2015 when his number was retired, and he was met with resounding cheers. <img src="https://cdn.sanity.io/images/7hhh6u8j/marketing-prod/4ba2a700fb65895316da4e89ab06a6e82c83661f-3000x2051.jpg" style="width: 100%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"> The Helmet Catch We go from “The Catch” in the 1980s to the “The Helmet Catch” of Super Bowl XLII in 2008, which pitted the undefeated Patriots against the underdog Giants. This is a non-traditional rivalry game, but a sort of rivalry that came to be with Eli Manning having Tom Brady’s number in their two Super Bowl matchups. Super Bowl XLII marked the first of the two times the teams squared off in the big game, and the Patriots had the lead late with New York making what appeared to be a futile comeback attempt. Things changed when Manning launched a 32-yard pass to David Tyree, who, as the play’s name implies, caught the jumpball pinned to his helmet over safety Rodney Harrison. The Giants went to score the game-winning touchdown four plays later, ending the Patriots’ Super Bowl hopes and perfect season. Fourth-and-Two When you think of recent rivalries, the showdowns between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady throughout the 2000s often take center stage. There are any number of moments that could ultimately be the choice from these games between the Colts and Pats, but Bill Belichick’s decision to go for it on fourth-and-two from his own-28 yard line during the 2009 regular season is one of the more iconic standalone plays. The teams were locked in a high-scoring affair and the Patriots held a six-point lead with two minutes remaining in the game. They failed to convert the fourth-down attempt and turned the ball over to the Colts, who predictably scored the game-winning touchdown with 13 seconds left. &nbsp; This was hardly the most high-stakes game between Manning and Brady, but it exemplifies the tight battles the team engaged in and the type of pressure that the excellent quarterback play constantly put on the opposing side. &nbsp; Sherman vs Crabtree The Seahawks and 49ers are another modern rivalry that has delighted NFL fans, with Seattle’s Legion of Boom defense taking on Colin Kaepernick, Michael Crabtree and others in the 49ers’ ever-efficient offense. The 2013 NFC Championship Game was a particularly tightly contested game and San Francisco looked to be in decent position to at least tie the game after reaching Seattle’s 17-yard line with 31 seconds remaining. At that point Kaepernick targeted Crabtree in the corner of the end zone, but cornerback Richard Sherman made a leaping deflection with the ball falling into the arms of a fellow defender to make the game-saving play. Perhaps the most iconic part of the play was Sherman’s postgame interview, during which he called Crabtree a “sorry receiver” and himself the best cornerback in the game in animated fashion The Seahawks went on to rout the Broncos in the Super Bowl, so the play had a massive impact on the franchise and left a mark on the divisional rivalry that won’t be forgotten.

Joe Burrow’s availability is still up in the air. The 26-year-old confirmed after the team’s second straight loss on Sunday that he tweaked his right calf and did not practice on Thursday. The same week the Bengals are dealing with injuries at the quarterback position, the Patriots made that position room a little bit smaller by signing one of their backups, Will Grier, on Friday. The Bengals then signed Reid Sinnett to the practice squad behind Jake Browning. This current hole is a bit perplexing knowing that the Bengals were one of the teams who had consistency on the coaching staff and on the roster. Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Joe Mixon have all been together for multiple years and the offensive line was upgraded with the addition of Orlando Brown Jr. on the left side. <a href="https://www.tipico.com/us/blog/nfl-week-3-preview-best-bets" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><img src="https://cdn.sanity.io/images/7hhh6u8j/marketing-prod/68d745ad52fe686233751c903154b7f1458467d3-1200x472.jpg" style="width: 100%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></a> Through two games the Bengals rank last in total offensive yards, near the bottom of the league (28th) in rushing, while scoring just two touchdowns in 8 quarters of football in 2023. Zac Taylor assured the media that fans will see more desirable play from his offense going forward. “This team, I think, is only going to continue to get better with every game that passes,” Taylor said. “When you stumble early, you’ve just got to learn from it. So many years in the past, we’ve learned from losses early in the season that have really propelled us in October, November and December. This will be no different, I’m very confident in that.” Everyone from players to staff have been singing the same tune this week. They are not panicking as they deal with early, unexpected misfortune this year. “There’s no overreaction on our end,” Taylor told the media. “We’ve got to be prepared for it outside of our locker room, which is natural. But we’re in a very difficult division. You’d have loved to come out of it 2-0. It was a great opportunity. The NFL’s highest paid player was under pressure less than 20 percent of the time last week due in part to his dedication to getting the ball out quickly. If he’s going to play hurt, the staff may have to integrate more run packages into the offense for MNF to take some of the pressure off. Burrow would also be dealing with the wrecking ball known as Aaron Donald, who has racked up double-digit sacks in five of the last six years. Last season he had just five sacks but missed six games with an ankle injury. The Rams also faced injuries to Cooper Kupp and Matthew Stafford in 2022 and finished with a 5-12 record, but they look much better early this season with a healthy Stafford. Donald is a seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time Defensive Player of the Year for a reason — he is on a comeback journey with something to prove as the leader of LA’s defense. Burrow’s mobility is compromised, and the offensive line will have to show up with one of their best protection plans yet against a fast defense. Matthew Stafford has opened the season on fire as one of just two quarterbacks in the league who’ve thrown for more than 300 yards in each of the first two games of the season. Cooper Kupp is still sidelined thanks to a hamstring injury, but this has opened the door for emerging talent Puka Nacua. Nacua&nbsp;was a fifth-round draft pick out of BYU in April and he has exploded onto the scene in the first two games of his career, eclipsing 100 yards receiving in each. He’s also set the record for most catches in a rookie's first two games with 25 total. The Rams run a high-powered offense, but Cincinnati has veteran defenders leading its locker room with cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie and Mike Hilton boasting 14 years of experience between them. Lou Anarumo’s defense has been solid enough to be in the top ten of the NFL, allowing just 190 passing yards per game through the young season. Cincinnati’s run defense has been abysmal, however, ranking in the bottom two of the league. The Bengals also gave up 415 total yards of offense to the Ravens last week, but they should have a young, talented player in Joseph Ossai returning this week after suffering an ankle injury during preseason. This is a game where Joe Mixon could get a healthy number of touches, and possibly even carry this offense to a victory in Primetime. With Burrow nursing an injury and the Rams defense struggling to stop the run — giving up an average 122 rush yards per game — I think we see most of the big chunk plays on the ground for Cincinnati. The Bengals are already in a must-win situation, and I think they finally right the ship with the entire league watching, with a 24-21 win. NFL Tennessee Titans @ Cleveland Browns — Browns -3 Deshaun Watson has not looked great this season at all. Mike Vrabel is very tough to bet against, because he does cover very often. Whether it’s a rivalry between players like Brady vs. Manning or teams like Steelers vs. Ravens, rivalries are fueled by competitiveness and emotion. Back-and-forth rivalries are fun, but rivalries can also be one-sided; the Patriots have won 14 straight games against the Jets in their AFC East rivalry heading into their Week 3 clash, while the Steelers grew their regular season home winning streak against their AFC North rival Browns to 20 games with their Week 2 win on Monday Night Football. Conventional rivalries usually develop because of proximity, familiarity, and/or high-stakes matchups, but the NFL also has some “unconventional rivalries.” These unconventional rivalries aren’t player vs. player or team vs. team, but more team or player vs. situation or concept. Cousins is 11-19 overall in primetime, though Monday Night Football specifically has been a bugaboo for him, as he’s 2-10 on that stage. Cousins has a .367 winning percentage in primetime and a .569 winning percentage (61-46-2) otherwise. <a href="https://state.tipico.us/login?prodsrc=SPORT" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><img src="https://cdn.sanity.io/images/7hhh6u8j/marketing-prod/36c033b2e1995dd1cde95ffb5fa7e05ae58f425b-1200x472.png" style="width: 100%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></a> Perhaps surprisingly, his primetime winning percentage is actually slightly better than that of Matthew Stafford, who is 10-18 (.357) in primetime, but Stafford gets a pass since his non-primetime record is also under .500 as a result of being dragged down by a bad Lions team for over a decade. When it comes to struggles on the national stage, though, Daniel Jones takes the cake with a remarkable record of 1-10 (.091). His lone win came on Sunday Night Football against the Commanders in Week 15 last season; a game in which Jones neither threw a TD nor rushed for one while racking up a combined 195 passing and rushing yards. The Giants’ lack of success in the evening extends beyond Jones’ primetime struggles, as New York had an 18-game losing streak in games that start at 4:25 p.m. ET or later, prior to the aforementioned win over Washington. Most recently, Jones suffered a 40-0 Week 1 loss to Dallas on Sunday Night Football, and he is unlikely to fare any better in primetime Thursday against San Francisco. New York Jets vs. Keeping Key Quarterbacks Healthy Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending Achilles injury on his first drive as a Jet was the latest in a string of tragic injuries to befall Jets quarterbacks just when the team thinks it has found a quarterback capable of repeating Joe Namath’s Super Bowl III success. In 1999, New York had high hopes coming off an AFC Championship Game appearance the previous season. Since then, every other NFL team has registered at least two shutouts. With the Josh Allen-led Bills coming to town in Week 3, Washington’s shutout-less streak is likely to live on. Speaking of Buffalo, the Bills shut out two opponents in 2021 alone, accounting for a quarter of that season’s shutouts. Denver Broncos vs. Super Bowl Passing Touchdowns The Broncos have been to eight Super Bowls in their storied franchise history, winning three. Five of those Super Bowls were started by Hall of Famers John Elway (three) and Peyton Manning (two), and yet, the Broncos have just four passing touchdowns in the Super Bowl as a franchise, one fewer than Patrick Mahomes has by himself in his three Super Bowl starts for the AFC West rival Chiefs. Elway had a 3:8 TD:INT in five appearances, Manning 1:3 TD:INT and Craig Morton’s stat line in his Super Bowl XII loss to the Cowboys in 1978 was 4-for-15 passing for 39 yards, no TDs and four interceptions. Add it all up and you get a 4:15 TD:INT for Denver’s QBs in the Super Bowl, though Broncos fans would view that as a good problem to have considering the team is nowhere near Super Bowl caliber at the moment, sitting at 0-2 after going 5-12 in 2022.
